Every little girl loves a classic fairytale that includes a princess who is trapped by an evil someone, a handsome prince who comes to her rescue, and of course a “happily ever after” ending. We were created to enjoy this type of story because, whether we know it or not, we live this life as the princess who is trapped until we discover who our prince truly is and allow Him to rescue us.
Jesus Christ came to rescue each one of us and is waiting for you to trust Him with your life, allowing Him to free you from your bondage. He has prepared for us a Happily Ever After place that will be enjoyed by those who love Him. Often, people think that heaven is a guarantee for us if we do good works, however, we can never do enough, be good enough, or pray enough to earn a spot in heaven. The way we get to live happily ever after is by allowing the True Prince, Christ, to rescue us and have a real relationship with Him. I don’t know about you, but this truth frees me from the tiresome, unending chase to be the “perfect” follower of Jesus, wife, mom, friend, etc. The truth is we are not perfect but rather absolute sinners who will never measure up to God’s standard no matter how “good” we try to be. Romans 3:23 states “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (emphasis mine).
The greatest love story of all time is between God and the part of His creation that caused Him to say “It is very good” (Gen. 1:31, emphasis mine): Humans. Before the beginning of time, He loved us, planned for us, and knew us by name. After Adam and Eve chose to disobey the one and only thing God asked them not to do, sin entered the world and since that time, we have needed a Rescuer to free us from death. Romans 6:23 clearly tells us this: “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Thankfully, we don’t have to worry about trying to (unsuccessfully) measure up. God loved us so much that He sent His Son (our Prince Charming) to die for each one of us so that He could be our Rescuer. He became sin so that He could present us to His Father as holy and blameless and grant us the gift of eternal life, not because of anything we’ve done, but because of everything He did for us (John 3:16). Here’s the catch: We have a choice. We can either accept the best FREE gift of all time: Eternal life, by allowing him to be our Prince and rescue us from bondage or we can continue to try to earn our way to heaven without Jesus Christ and never experience the Happily Ever After that we were all created to dream of from the time we were little girls. John 14:6 clearly tells us that nobody gets to God (and heaven) except through Christ.
If you don’t have this sweet, personal relationship with the True Rescuer, I encourage you to begin it today (Matthew 7:7). Go before Him in prayer and thank Him for coming to this earth to rescue you. Ask Him to forgive you for your poor choices and prideful heart thinking that you could, on your own accord, claim your spot in heaven. Commit to Him that you will allow Him to be your Prince Charming and that you will begin to have a relationship with Him, seeking Him daily through reading His love letter to us (the Bible), talking with him (through prayer), and trusting Him with your life moment-by-moment and day-by-day, allowing Him to change you to be the woman you were created to be for His glory. He promises us that if we seek Him, he will come near to us (James 4:8). If you don’t know Him personally yet, I want you to know that He can be trusted. He is faithful to ALL of His promises (Psalm 145:13). From the beginning of time into TODAY, tomorrow, and forever, He will keep His promises to you.
If you have this relationship but have chosen to “do life” without Him, I encourage you to confess that to Him and start fresh today. If you have truly claimed Him as your Rescuer, then let Him rescue you, carry you, strengthen you, encourage you, and pave the path in front of you. We have to die to selves over and over again so that His light can shine through us. It is easy to leave Him behind as we press forward in all of the responsibilities that consume us, however, if we put Him in a box and only bring Him out when times get difficult or when we go to church, then we limit Him greatly. He wants to be front and center in each of our lives. Let Him have His way with you for your refinement and His glory.
Here are some resources that have encouraged me in my walk with Christ. I encourage you to find them at your local library or add them to your home library. The Jesus Storybook Bible is one of my all-time favorites. Even though I purchased it for our girls, I was equally captivated by its love-story approach. Everyone should have a copy of it, even if you are a single adult! If you’re wanting to purchase a Study Bible, I think the NLT is a great translation, especially for those who are just starting to read His love letter to us. The ESV is a great translation as well. My husband owns The Message Bible and raves about it. If you have a Bible sitting on a bookshelf at home, no matter the translation, get it out and start reading! God will speak to you through it. Let Him!
