She goes through the entire book of Proverbs, highlighting one verse or one group of verses from each chapter that pertains to girls in the Tween years. She’s written several of these and they are all excellent. They serve as a great one-on-one tool but would also work in a girls small group environment.
I chose to move through it slowly with our girls, focusing on one chapter a week, reviewing them as we would build on. In order to stretch this out over four days, I also purchased notebooks at our local OfficeMax and decorated for them to use as their notebooking journals. The notebooks I use are MEAD Wirebound Sketchbooks. The paper quality in these sketchbooks is excellent and the hardcover allows for easy decorating and keeps the pages from getting bent and torn. Though a bit pricey, they are worth the investment in my opinion.
Day One: Read the introduction and story as well as the verse(s) in their bibles. They would also use this day to begin drawing a picture in their notebooks to illustrate the message of that specific proverb. I would bring out lots of supplies, including nice quality colored pencils, pastels, gel pens in multiple colors, glitter, jewels, etc. to encourage quality artwork. I believe that a picture can speak a thousand words and often, the picture they drew for each highlighted verse helped them to remember the proverb.
Day Two: Review the verse(s) and continue working on the picture. Discuss the questions, answering them in their notebooks
Day Three: Review the verse(s), have an open discussion
Day Four: Recite verse(s) from memory.
We all learned a lot going through this study. Looking closely at one proverb a week and being diligent to memorize scripture, gain wisdom, and practice discernment in that specific area was so impactful. I think, sometimes, we can get overwhelmed with the amount of wisdom there is to gain instead of just taking it one step at a time. Slowing our study down and seeking to internalize and practice what we were learning for that given week was the key. Even now, months since this study, the girls will list the things the Lord hates, what to do when enticed by sin, and other important pieces of wisdom that is helping to guide them. Their notebook also serves a great reminder of these 31 lessons in wisdom that God has used to plant into their hearts.
